Shane Kenno from Up & Up and Jamie Brewster from The Drop In at Tanilba Bay joined with a number of Jack’s friends and family to paint a piece of art in his memory on one of the pipe walls at Medowie skatepark. Jack Murphy was a bright and happy 14 year old, already making a name for himself in the professional scooter world at a young age. He was a resident of Medowie, and a Year 9 student attending San Clemente High School. At just 14, Jack passed away from a heart defect on 2 June this year. Jack was described as being larger than life, and someone who would do anything for his family and his mates. His family asked his friends to attend his funeral service dressed in bright colours, and to bring along their scooters, honouring their son’s passion. Hundreds of attendees packing the Sacred Heart Cathedral in Newcastle for the service, where they honoured him with music, stories and love. Jack’s mum Siobhan and sister Aimee attended the get together to create Jack’s mural in Medowie, even joining in on painting their own sections. Friends of Jack’s took turns adding to the artwork, before artists finished the piece off, sealing the artwork for its protection. The artwork will adorn Medowie’s skatepark for a long time to come, protected by his friends and Medowie’s young people, ensuring the memory of a happy, caring, fun loving mate called Jack lives on.
