THE ‘Snak n Rap’ event was a hit on the weekend, with nearly one hundred young people turning out to celebrate and join in on the fun.

This was the first of a series of three “Snak n Rap” events that are being held at the Medowie Skate Park.

These community events are being funded by Port Stephens Council under the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) Hey Tosser Campaign.

However, they would not be possible without the support of the Medowie community, young people, parents, schools and other groups, such as the Medowie Lions Club and the Medowie Neighbourhood Watch crew.

Snak n rap also recognise the ongoing support from Port Stephens Deputy Mayor Cr Chris Doohan and James Campbell, the Senior Community Development and Engagement Officer at Port Stephens Council.

This series of “Snak n Raps” also included youth workers from UP&UP running creative workshops at both Medowie Public School and Wirreanda Public School.

Shane from Up & UP told News Of The Area, “During these workshops, students were encouraged to think about what it means to have a safe and litter free Skate Park and, using drawing activities, students came up with images, symbols and messages designed to encourage people to stop littering.”

“All of students contributed fantastic ideas, drawings and messages.”

“For this event, one of the ideas was chosen to be the message, and that was “Just Bin It”

“Just Bin It” was an idea from a group of students, inspired by the Michael Jackson song “Beat It” with its catchy chorus changed from Just Beat It, to Just Bin It.

Using this message, todays Snak N Rap included art activities around this message of “Just Bin It”

In other words, put your rubbish in the bin.

Participants participated in spray painting and drawing activities using stencils of Michael Jackson and stencils of the words “Just Bin It”.

This message was also used to have conversation with Skate park users about how they can ensure that the Skate Park stays clean and welcoming for everyone,

Medowie neighbourhood watch and Medowie Lions were also on hand, with neighbourhood watch providing a lolly guessing competition, and Lions cooking a bbq lunch for everyone.
