NAIDOC week is coming up from the 8-15 July 2018, and the local Indigenous community group in Port Stephens and Newcastle have some great family friendly activities for you to take part in.

This year’s theme ‘Because of her, we can’ honours the role Indigenous women play in our families, community and workplaces.

Worimi Local Aboriginal Land Council (LALC) has three events happening in our community.

Monday 9 July join the community in their march at Raymond Terrace.

Meet at 8:30am for a 9am march on the corner of Sturgeon and Port Stephens Streets up to the Port Stephens Council Chambers for a flag ceremony and smoking ceremony in the forecourt.

Wednesday 11 July 2018, Nelson Bay will host the second march for Worimi LALC.

Marchers can meet at Nelson Bay Bowling Club car park at 8:30am for a 9am march up to the APEX park.

Following the march, there will be activities and a BBQ lunch at APEX park, concluding at 2pm.

Friday 13 July, Raymond Terrace hosts the Family fun day at King Park Sporting Complex from 10-2pm.

All are welcome to join the fun day, jam packed full with service providers, entertainment, amusement rides and food.

For anyone wishing to join the Awabakal LTD NAIDOC fun, they have a number of events planned.

The Awabakal Family Health BBQ will take place on 6 July at 11am at Raymond Terrace Community Clinic.

Come along and meet some of the Family Health team from Awabakal and have a yarn about the services and programs we provide to families in Port Stephens.

July 6-19 will see the Awabakal Photography exhibition hosted at Wallsend District Library.

In celebration of this year’s NAIDOC theme ‘Because of Her, We Can!’ and in partnership with The City of Newcastle, Awabakal will recognise Aboriginal women of the Hunter communities who have made valuable contributions to our people.

The Newcastle 2018 NAIDOC Community day is one not to be missed on Monday 9 July.

The day will begin with a formal flag raising at Civic Park at 9:30am, followed by a march to the foreshore for a community festival from 10:30am with market stalls, food, kids amusements, music and entertainment.

Special guest entertainers include; Justice Crew, Street Warriors, Black Fulla Got Talent and Sharnee Fenwick.

Join community in helping celebrate this special week, and come along to an event or two.
