AUSTRALIA’s biggest morning tea continues to attract hundreds of events annually, with this year predicted to top the $11.9 million it raised in 2017.

And with good reason, as 2018 marks the 25th anniversary of this most popular event.

Held by the Cancer Council, organisations and individuals across the nation organise their own morning tea to raise money and awareness to the insidious disease that is cancer.

Money raised goes into all areas of cancer support: from research and prevention to support and practical advice, including the school-based SunSmart program.

Port Stephens this year has a number of morning teas that are being held.

Federal Member for Port Stephens Ms Meryl Swanson MP supported the even by holding an outdoor event.

Perched on the front veranda of her office in Raymond Terrace, Ms Swanson cordially invited passers-by to join the morning tea.

Those in attendance were treated to a homemade cake and slice baked by Mrs Barbara Heaton.

Hosting the event, Ms Swanson told News Of The Area, “I think it’s a fabulous initiative to bring together people to raise money and awareness for the organisation.”

“I don’t think I know anyone who doesn’t know someone who has been affected by cancer.”

“We are beginning to understand better the triggers for cancer and more sophisticated, targeted medications are being trialled.”

“It is great to get together with people for a cuppa and one, raise awareness of cancer and the work of the Cancer Council and two, support research for this insidious disease.”

Port Stephens Councillor, Mr Giacomo Arnott told News of The Area, “I am really glad to support Meryl and her team in this morning tea.”

“It has touched me personally like many others in the community.”

If you don’t want to miss out on participating in a Biggest Morning Tea, you are welcome to join the Terrace Quilting even on Monday, 4 June at 10am.

Located at 21 King Street, Raymond Terrace there will be a selection of delectable slices along with tea and coffee available for a donation of $5.

In addition there will be a raffle consisting of three prizes, all handmade crafts.

Owner of the shop, Ms Leanne Moore, told News Of The Area, “We all know someone who has been touched by cancer.”

“Come along and join us as we raise funds for this very important cause.”
