MEDOWIE and the Tilligerry Peninsula students were in strong numbers on the winners list of the recent 2018 Port Stephens Mayoral Academic Scholarships.

Valued at $2,000 each, the scholarships provide financial assistance to residents from the Port Stephens local government area who are starting university or TAFE in 2018.

All scholarships were sponsored by local businesses, which included Ampcontrol, Destination Port Stephens, Hunter Land, Hunter Readymixed Concrete, Macka’s Sand and Soil Supplies, McDonald Jones Homes, Newcastle Airport, Raymond Terrace Bowling Club, Salamander Bay Recycling, Soldiers Point Bowling Club, Suez Recycling and Recovery, Telstra Shop – Salamander Bay, Tomago Aluminium, Weathertex and The Wests Group Australia.

One of the deserving winners was Taylah Parker from Medowie.

She told News Of The Area, “It was pretty exciting knowing that I had received one of the scholarships, but listening to the backgrounds of all the other recipients that night was amazing and everyone truly deserved to be awarded with the scholarships.”

“Mine will definitely assist me in purchasing textbooks each semester.”

Taylah has big plans for the future, telling us, “My interest to choose my degree came from the subjects I chose to study at school in year 11 & 12, such as business studies and legal studies, my teachers made it really easy for me to understand and enjoy my classes so I decided to try and continue that into university which led me to pick a Bachelor of Business/Bachelor of Commerce Combined.”

Tyess Cook from Medowie told News Of The Area, “I applied because it was a great financial boost to assist me in purchasing items such as textbooks, uniforms, stethoscope and course fees and I’m greatly appreciative towards Hunter Ready Mix Concrete for sponsoring the scholarship.”

“I have moved to Port Macquarie and am Studying a Bachelor of Paramedicine, at Charles Sturt University.”

“I hope to one day work for the NSW ambulance in the Hunter and Port Stephens area, which I’ve always had a passion for, whilst being able to also come back and serve my community,” he said.

Other students from Medowie and Tilligerry included; Caitlin Field from Medowie studying a Bachelor of Biomedical Science at University of Newcastle, Joshua Archer from Medowie studying a Bachelor of Engineering University of Newcastle, Justine Bull from Medowie studying a Bachelor of Engineering at University of Newcastle, and Tahlia Madeline Marks-Woolley from Mallabula studying a Bachelor of Laws at University of Newcastle.
