It is a spiced sweet bun, made with currants or raisins, marked with a cross on the top, and traditionally eaten on Good Friday.

They are however, the centre of great debate around when they should be sold, with many sellers making the most of the publicity and selling them as early as a few days after Christmas.

Raymond Terrace can now however boast that they are the home to to the top Hot Cross Bun maker in the land, after one of their own took out the State Hot Cross Bun baking championships last week.

Colin Roberts, who is a Baker at Woolworths in Raymond Terrace is the talented Baker who topped the table with his impressively tasty Hot Cross Buns.

Manager of Raymond Terrace Woolworths North, Simon Marchant, told News Of The Area, “Colin’s Recipe for success is simply take the time to make the product, enjoy what you do and take pride in your work.”

“Colin, who has been a Woolworths bakery team member since 2000, but had not entered previously as fellow Baker Martin Fanning would usually step up and put an entry in and in the past Martin has also been very successful in the competition.”

“So accepting the challenge for the first time, Colin entered his Hot Cross buns in an effort to always improve his skills, and was successful in taking out the Zone six Hot Cross Buns bake off,” he said.

“Congratulations Colin and well done,” he added.

The place winners for the state competition were, Collin Roberts from Raymond Terrace North in first place, Corrie Andrews from Taree in second place and Michael Brodie from Swansea in third place.
