This was certainly the case during the recent Masonite Road Fire emergency which was located just south of the communities of Raymond Terrace, Campvale and Medowie.

When it was decided that the fire command centre was to be placed at the Lakeside Playing Fields, the Raymond Terrace ‘Roosters’ Rugby League Club jumped to action.

The club, along with lots of volunteers, answered the call and opened their facilities.

They cooked dinner on their barbecues, handed out drinks and offered any assistance that the many firefighters required as they sought respite from the, at times, out of control inferno.

Along with help from the Raymond Terrace Lions Club and a local mission group, over one hundred firefighters and support crew were kept fed and hydrated during the many hours required to keep the flames at bay.

The local community also pitched in with donations of water, food with even the odd treat thrown in to keep morale at a high level.

With the barbecue cooking up a storm and the dressing sheds offering a place for tired crews to recover away from the elements, the Lakeside Playing Fields offered the many brigades and rural fire volunteers a true sanctuary from the blaze.

Jamie Douglas from Raymond Terrace Rugby League Club told News Of The Area, “We’re a family friendly club, and we are always on the lookout for ways we can help the community.”

“This was an emergency situation and we did what we thought was the right thing to do.”

“The firies do an amazing job, so it was a no brainer for us, and we’re just happy everything worked out in the end,” he said.
