The popular catch and release fishing competition is a family-oriented event, with prizes up for grabs for reeling in the biggest bass, the mightiest mullet and many other species.

The weekend of fun and fishing will kick off with the traditional Bass Bash Ball on Friday 9 February from 8pm at Bulahdelah Bowling Club.

Live music from Secret Society will ensure the party rocks well into the night, providing the perfect opportunity to welcome visiting anglers to the town.

Bulahdelah Fishing Club President Darren Carrall said conditions are looking good for the weekend event.

“The water is a bit saltier than usual for this time of year because of the extended dry period, but this won’t affect fishing at all,” he said.

As part of a restocking program, the Fishing Club poured thousands of bass fingerlings into the Myall and Crawford Rivers in December last year, so there should be plenty of fish to nab across the entire competition area.

Darren said a bounty on carp, which is classed as a noxious fish, is also on offer this year to assist with keeping the rivers healthy.

“We know there are carp in the river systems and the cash prizes are an incentive for people to fish for them,” he said.

“This ties in with our recent release of fingerlings, as the more bass you have in the river, the less carp you will have.”

Darren said registrations for the competition open at 3pm on Friday at the riverbank weigh-in station and extend throughout the weekend.

The event, now in its 26th year, will conclude with a presentation at the Bowling Club at 1pm on Sunday 11 February.
