When you think of football in Raymond Terrace, you automatically think of Rugby League.

But as has been the case in many Rugby League heartland areas, the emergence of Australia’s native game is starting to be felt.

Australian rules football has arrived in the Port Stephens area, and it won’t be going anywhere.

The Port Stephens Power Football Club is open for business for those who are wanting a change from Rugby League, and are ready to welcome them into the Aussie Rules fold.

For the uninitiated, Australian rules football is a lot more than just ‘aerial ping pong’.

It is a highly skilled and tough sport to play, yet it is a very enjoyable and satisfying team game to be a part of.

With the team spread all over the oval playing field, each member has to do their job for the team to be victorious.

Port Stephens Power have an open age Women’s team and junior teams for both boys and girls.

The Women’s team are currently training in preparation for a strong 2018 season in the Newcastle/Hunter competition.

However, they are always looking to new players willing to try their hand at a new sporting experience.

Port Stephens Power club President Mel Nelson is also a member of the Women’s team, “We are always looking for players and it really doesn’t matter if you have played Australian rules before, as long as you are willing to learn and prepared to have a real go, we’d love to see you at training.”

Club Vice President Beau Pitcher believes Port Stephens Power can give the local area a true sporting alternative.

“I think once the people of Port Stephens experience a live game of Aussie Rules, they’ll be hooked.”

“There really is nothing like it. it’s non-stop, it’s fast and it’s full of skill,” she said.

If you would like to find out more, Women’s training is already in full swing, and is held at Ferodale Oval each Tuesday at 5pm.

Juniors will recommence in the new year.
