Co-Principal, Jo Pope, said the quality of the Ashwood Devons attracted buyers from across the state for the Helmsman style auction. “We have the auction in August each year because that’s usually when buyers want to join their bulls and start breeding,” Jo said. “We have the best on sale and that quality is becoming known amongst producers.” Females were also up for auction with three joined heifers on offer, selling for an average of $2,300. Jo said the two-year-old heifers were joined to Ashwood Knockout, the back to back Grand Champion bull at the Ekka Royal Queensland Show in 2015 and 2016. Ashwood Devons has also won many champion prize ribbons at the Sydney Royal Easter Show. “We have had a lot of success at the shows and I think people have come to associate our name with quality,” Jo said. National Livestock Reporting Service Operations Manager, Damon Holmes, was guest speaker at the sale, and said current trends have given the beef industry a boost of confidence. “The market is not at record highs at the moment, but over the last two years prices have continued to improve,” he said. “In the current environment, we have seen how our stock has really been driving that market and it has started to pull back.” Jo said although the dry winter conditions have been tough, the prices at the weekend sale were well above last year’s average of $5,400.
