16 August: The weather featured in all bowls played this week with the 50 players that turned out to compete in the usual Wednesday Nominated Triples experiencing the wrath of a screaming south-westerly.

Both greens were in play with the grass running very nicely.

The winners of the Queen’s Kitchen draw were; Lance Atkins, Pip Sullivan and Greg Pearson.

The random winners were; Ken McKeown, Daryl Martin and Merv Mills.

18 August: Conditions today were all but impossible today but 12 players, who were later presented with courage awards for braving the elements, competed in the Fabulous Friday Open Pairs.

I do not have the results to hand but as the field was drastically reduced no jackpot draw was made.

19 August: The first rounds of the Club Mixed Pairs competition were played today with competitors braving the unrelenting wind

Ultimately there were 15 teams entered and most teams enjoyed a bye in the first round.

Three matches were played with the wind evening–out any bias there may have been between the teams in regard to ability.

Setting the pace for things to follow were the husband and wife team of; Henk and Kerry Faber.

They prevailed over Dale Winter and Leigh Hunt 14-11.

Showing that he still has what it takes to win, “Silver Fox” Tom Parkinson and the evergreen, Verlie Grey managed a great win over Sandra Leisemann and Merv Mills 17 – 14 and in the remaining match, Jill McBride and Noel Jackson held on to win a close contest over Lynn Green and Ross Barry, 15-14.

Thanks to Ron Green for umpiring today in the very poor conditions.

20 August: Thankfully the winners from Saturday did not have to face even worst conditions today when the wind was accompanied by some persistent rain.

Sunday Mixed Bowls was washed out as was the second round matches in the Club Mixed Pairs.

These games are now set down for Saturday 26th at 12.40pm.

In other news; Club representatives have been active in promoting Tea Gardens in other arenas in the Newcastle District.

The Club’s representatives in the Bowls NSW Rookie Singles, Col Saillard, Ken Devlin and Luke Gliwa did well in each winning at least one of their singles events.

There are some really “red-hot” rookies playing bowls and our players now know what to expect if they remain eligible to compete next year.

In the Newcastle District “Mattara” Bowls Carnival, Club Champion, Sean Mearrick made it through to the quarter finals of the Open Singles and in the Restricted Singles, Neil Kibble also made the quarter finals.

Well done!

The Club was also represented at Lorne on Monday when Gary Wynne, Stewart Sturrock and John Slater held of a field of 34 teams to come away with the Probus Morpeth on Hunter Shield.
