There are also theme days and bus trips to the movies, shopping and concerts to keep the members active. Coordinator, Diane Burns, said the group was formed in 2009 to provide social contacts for the aged, frail, isolated and people living alone. “It began with a small band of ladies, and almost 10 years on, has tripled in number,” she said. “It targets men and women over the age of 65 years who can meet socially, make new friends and enjoy each other’s company.” The sessions include morning tea and lunch with gentle exercise and activities targeting specific health needs in between. Dianne said exercise guru Peter Auriac has “given the ladies a new lease of life”. “They have really improved their mobility, and meditation improves breathing and better sleep patterns,” she said. “The quizzes help stimulate those little grey cells and games with balls strengthen their hand and eye coordination.” Group member Jean Grater, said she always looks forward to having a “chat over a cuppa”. “The physical and mental activities keep us alert, it’s good company and we appreciate all those who help,” she said. The Social Group is run by local volunteers and is supported by MidCoast Council Aging and Disability Services. Diane said they are also very thankful for the assistance provided by Bulahdelah Bowling Club. New members are always welcome to join and more information is available by phoning 1300658830.
