MEMBER for Myall Lakes, Stephen Bromhead, hosted a breakfast for student leaders from secondary schools across the region last week.

Meeting in Taree, the young leaders networked, discussed issues and shared their future plans.

Bulahdelah Central School (BCS) Vice-Captain, Tom Locke, said Mr Bromhead also spoke about his own background in leadership, from a life in politics to running a business.

“He talked about the many career opportunities he has had, from starting out as a nurse, then moving into the police force and then into law and politics,” Tom said.

“He has had a very full career and showed that sometimes you need to persevere until you find your place.”

Mr Bromhead said the breakfast provided a great opportunity for the leaders to meet with their peers, and to be reminded of the importance of their roles within their schools and the wider community.

“It’s great to see all these students put their hand up and take on important roles within their schools, but it’s important that they continue that past their schooling years,” Mr Bromhead said.

“Community organisations such as Lions, Rotary, Toastmasters and so on, provide further opportunities for students to hone their leadership skills.”

BCS Captain, Kaitlyn Gregory, said the State Budget, Gonski Funding and leadership were some of the topics raised by the students.

“The advice given was that you don’t have to be the smartest person to be a good leader, but you have to be the most dedicated and determined,” Kaitlyn told News Of The Area.

“He encouraged us to be involved in the community, as the skills gained will help us in our careers.”

Mr Bromhead said it is important to support our future leaders and give them the backing they need to flourish.
