FOOD technology students in Year 10 from Tomaree High School got a taste of what it is like to work in hospitality last week.

Twenty-nine students catered to 150 attendees at the launch of the Blue Water Country Music Festival.

This is a new area of learning which offers a taste of hospitality for students before they choose their senior electives.

The idea behind the unit gives students a taste of senior courses, giving them insights into further studies in hospitality.

The student were assessed on their team work, ability to produce menu items for a large scale function using principles of hygiene and workplace safety throughout the task.

Head Teacher of Hospitality Karen Shaw told News Of The Area that this is a good pathway for our students in Nelson Bay, as tourism and hospitality are large local employers.

“Even if students don’t choose hospitality as their profession, they can always use these qualifications to work their way through university or TAFE,” she said.

Bob Westbury, Vice Chair of the Real Futures Foundation congratulated the students on their professionalism on the night.

“The food was to a very high standard and the students were positive ambassadors for the school and our community,” he said.

Tomaree Business Chamber President Ryan Palmer told News Of The Area, “I think the students did a fantastic job, it is great to see that real life work is integrated into the learning that students are doing.”

“Many people commented how good the food was.”

“They did an excellent job and offering this type of experience to youth is another benefit of holding festivals and events,” he said.
