The Gurr Family have resided in Medowie for ten years, and have proven above and beyond how much they love our community, by giving back through their small business at every turn possible.

Rod and Kylie Gurr are the owners of Hennessy Coffee, and recently rose to local fame when they donated countless coffees and drinks to tired firefighters.

This generous and selfless act, however, was not the Gurr’s first act of local generosity.

They have built their business around their desire to care for others, and regularly offer their support to local charity events and fundraisers, without expectation of accolades or kudos.

The Hennessy Coffee owners have attended many local events this year, including voting day and Brickfest at Wirreanda Public School, Grandparents day, Beanie for Brain Cancer (Mark Hughes Foundation) and Pink Stumps day for Breast Cancer at Medowie Christian School, Medowie Rugby Breast Cancer Pink day and Relay for Life Lake Macquarie/Newcastle at Glendale.

At every event the Gurr family attend, they donate $1 from every cup back to the charity or community group.

They are also known to donate a hamper or two to groups or people need, and you will find them monthly at the Medowie Markets, with their $1 a cup going back to the Overflow Church.

Their latest proud moment as a business found them attending the Medowie Fire Brigade on Friday night at 6:45pm during the Lone Pine fire, serving all night and not finishing their service until Saturday at 10pm.

They served our tired, hardworking firefighters hundreds of free cold drinks and hot coffees, and used social media to facilitate the re-stocking of food stores for the brigade members by countless community members.

Kylie Gurr told News Of The Area, “We received phenomenal feedback, and it was really humbling.”

“We don’t give, then expect something in return, we just love being in a position where we can help others, it is its own reward.”
