SUNNYBOYS, the iconic frozen sticky treat enjoyed by generations around the country, is now officially a thing of the past.

A spokeswoman for The Daily Drinks Co confirmed the production of the icy treats stopped in August this year due to a “sustained reduction in consumer demand over a long period of time.”

Friends Georgina Cunich, Kenny Richardson and John Sahyoun were lucky enough to snag one of the few remaining boxes of Sunnyboys left on local supermarket shelves.

The group enjoyed an afternoon together in Bulahdelah last week reminiscing about the pyramids of frozen delight they grew up with.

“I liked that you could squeeze them open if you didn’t have a pair of scissors, you just had to wait for them to defrost a bit so they weren’t rock-hard,” Kenny said.

“You had to be careful otherwise they would come flying out and land on the ground.”

Kenny told News Of The Area the first Sunnyboys he brought cost 10 cents each and he remembers always carefully peeling back the silver foil lining to see if he had won a free one.

Sunnyboys came in Razz Raspberry, Glug Cola, Zap Lime and Orange Explosion flavours and everyone had their own unique way of enjoying them.

Sucking out all the flavour leaving behind a chunk of tasteless white ice and banging them against a wall to mush them up were just a few of the many techniques used.

For John, crunching on every bit of ice was the perfect way to consume the frozen treat.

“By crunching all the ice, you could enjoy the flavour all the way to the end,” he said.

“Sunnyboys were always good on long, hot days and summer just won’t be the same without them.”

Like many parents, Georgina has shared the Sunnyboys experience with her young children.

“Over the last few summers, we’ve introduced our kids to Sunnyboys, they liked to sit outside on hot days and enjoy the treats together,” Georgina said.

The Daily Drinks Co spokeswoman told News Of The Area although regrettably having to make the hard decision to stop the production of Sunnyboys, there are no plans to delete any other products from their range.

“Consumers will still be able to purchase all our other popular water ice brands, including Zooper Dooper and Quelch,” she said.
