BY 8am on Saturday morning, the streets around the Bank Hotel Dungog resounded with roars as highly-polished show cars and bikes, hot rods and rat rods, tractors and trucks rolled into town for the annual Dungog Rumble. By 10am, most entrants had parked and primped their rides, ready for judging at 11am. Hooke Street was closed between Dowling Street and Lord Street to allow the vehicles room to park. Cars were lined up and down the block, with motorcycles having their own area in the hotel car park. Visitors from outside the area and locals alike flocked to inspect and admire the vehicles. The Rumble is a charity event. This year the funds raised will go to eight Dungog Shire junior sporting teams. There were a variety of hotly contested awards, such as People’s Choice, Best Hot Rod and Best Vintage Vehicle. The new Bruce Clark Memorial trophy was awarded for Best in Show. While the vehicles were the stars of the show, there were plenty of other attractions. Exciting post splitting demonstrations added the clamour of chainsaws and showers of sawdust. Blacksmithing demonstrations throughout the day also drew interest. Face-painted children peered into car windows, and were awestruck by the Fire and Rescue truck display. Jesse Caldwell, who had just moved to Dungog that day, was pleasantly surprised to discover the Rumble. He described the unexpected spectacle as “cool,” and “awesome”. A trio of black t-shirted gentlemen reclined on the seat at the front of the pub. They were the previous Rumble organiser Barry Holland, Chris Fuller from Rutherford and Dean Choma from Fast Lane of Leppington, a Rumble sponsor. Dean had organised a Rumble Cruise, starting the previous day at Windsor. He hopes to do another Cruise next year, with more vehicles.
