Social waves of change for Port Stephens parents Port POPUP - DAupdate Port Stephens Port Stephens News by News Of The Area - Modern Media - June 7, 2023 Kalli Tisdell, Hannah Davies (plus Archie) and Destiny Field of Surfing Mums Port Stephens feeling refreshed after some saltwater therapy on Friday. SUNSHINE, saltwater and the picturesque scenery only the beaches of the Tomaree Peninsula can provide. For the Surfing Mums movement here in Port Stephens it’s the perfect recipe to hit the reset button and reconnect with the community while experiencing the great outdoors at its finest. As Hannah Davies from Surfing Mums Port Stephens explains, it’s all about supporting and nurturing parents, grandparents and carers while having some fun in the sun. “Surfing Mums is not just for mums but for all caregivers of children,” said Hannah. “It’s about having a positive impact on people’s well-being and re-establishing connections to the community that can sometimes slip a little while going through the trials and tribulations of parenthood. “We all bring our kids down and take turns looking after them so our members can get a little saltwater reprieve!” While surfing may be in the title there’s also no prerequisite to grab a board or even jump in the ocean. “It’s not just about surfing but more about having a place to come and enjoy the local environment with some supportive like minded people,” said Hannah. “You don’t even need to be able to surf. “You can just grab a coffee and have a chat!” For group member Destiny Field, Surfing Mums was a way to ease back into the ocean after overcoming the impacts of a car accident earlier this year. “At first I was second guessing if I was ready to try and get back into the ocean again,” said Destiny. “I saw the post on Facebook about Surfing Mums in the local area and I decided to give it a go. “After meeting the crew and getting a few waves again it’s sparked that new lease on life sort of feeling!” Surfing Mums Port Stephens meet up once a week intermittently on Wednesdays or Fridays.
