LEADERS of tomorrow from Tea Gardens Public School attended and gained some inspiration at the National Young Leaders Day in Sydney on Tuesday, 7 March.

Nine aspiring leaders from the school’s famed student parliament, the Speaker and eight Ministers, attended the event with students from Booral Public School, at the International Convention Centre (ICC) in Sydney.

Young Leaders Day is designed to benefit students who possess leadership potential and show interest in developing it further, with many schools sending students recently elected or appointed to leadership positions.

The students also got to visit the world-famous Taronga Zoo while they were in town.

With the last two years affected by COVID and floods, several attending students were thrilled to have the opportunity, and for some, just being in the big city for the first time was exciting enough, not to mention keeping some pretty impressive official company.

“Our leaders learnt from some extremely impressive Australians, from his Excellency Governor General to Caitlin Bassett, Nazeem Hussain, Chris Green and Dr Jordan Nguyen,” Principal Mark Clemson told News Of The Area.

“They taught the students important lessons about leading through listening and putting others first; the words of Dr Nguyen were a great reminder ‘One life, persist to improve many’.”

“It was a fantastic opportunity for the kids to learn from people they look up to,” said Miss Caitlyn Kelly, Year 6 teacher at TGPS since 2018, who has accompanied the kids to YLD three times.

“I was excited about learning from other leaders,” said Year 6 student Isabelle Yuswak.

“Caitlin Bassett was my favourite speaker, she told us all about how to have good sportsmanship,” added Year 6 student Rhani Genner.

School Parliament Prime Minister Kade O’Neill was especially impressed by the work of Dr Jordan Nguyen, recalling, “He built a car for a kid with cerebral palsy, which he could drive with his eyes!”

No doubt we will see one or more of the TGPS attendees speaking themselves at future events.
