William is planning to study a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering (Honours) at the University of Newcastle.

He aspires to work in the area of high performance vehicle engineering – ideally on the engineering team in Formula One racing.

“I am pretty proud to be receiving the scholarship, I’ve worked hard handling school and sport and I am excited and it is a good way to get started in the future,” William told News Of The Area.

He plans to stay in Port Stephens and commute to university four days per week for his studies.

For the next generation of students studying the HSC, William offered the following advice, “Do the work early in the term so you leave less for breaks, do it all over term one and two and even term four of Year 11 – get started early and study hard.”

William’s scholarship was funded by Tomago Aluminium.

Tomago Aluminium is Australia’s largest aluminium smelter which has been in constant operation since 1983.

The company contributes $1.5 billion annually to the Australian economy of which $800 million is spent locally.

Guiliana Arnott, HR Advisor at Tomago Aluminium told News Of The Area, “For us it is important that recently we have found that getting fresh voices and fresh eyes into the business has been very important, especially because we are trying to work towards decarbonisation.

“Getting new faces and new people into the business that has had environmentalism driven into them their whole lives is very important to us,” she said.
