AFTER missing out on a mid-year production at the Jetty Memorial Theatre (JMT) due to difficulties in obtaining performance rights, Coffs Harbour Amateur Theatrical Society (CHATS) are hitting the stage with their production of Shakespeare’s much-loved comedy ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’.

Directed by Lily Tasker with assistant director Manny Lagettie, the show features a wide range of actors from young first-time performers to older experienced players and showcases a number of up-and-coming performers in the ‘lovers’ roles (Hermia, Helena, Lysander and Demetrius).

There is a play within the play, ‘A tedious brief scene of young Pyramus and his love Thisbe; very tragical mirth’ performed by the rude mechanicals, a group of tradespeople from Athens with little skill in performing.

Mixing everything up with mischief is the fairy Puck, who at the direction of the king of the fairies Oberon, attempts to enchant various characters with hilarious results.

Director Lily Tasker said, “I fell in love with Shakespeare while being assistant director for CHATS Romeo and Juliet, which tragically didn’t make the stage due to the impact of the pandemic.

“This production is very close to my heart, and I am loving having such a talented and responsive cast to work with.”

The production opens at the JMT on Friday October 7 and will run until Sunday October 16, with shows on Friday, Saturday, the first Sunday and Wednesday evenings commencing at 7pm, and with Saturday and Sunday Matinees from 2:30.
